A Run at the Gauntlet
As a youth I hated to write. In high school it was torture. In college it was a drudgery...until a group of roommates I lived with began to get into poetry. We began writing poems for Sunday afternoon poet's session which turned into the "Over Ground Society." We would meet with flashlights under a huge tree in a park close to our apartment. The pine tree had huge boughs that hung to the ground. We would crawl under them into a room-like area concealed from that outside. We would laugh up a storm as we read our poems. Some of them were meaningless, some had a great deal of meaning and were usually the funniest. Below I have listed some of the poems I have written. Some have symbols and stories and valuable aspects of life. Some are meaningless.

Beautiful Imperfections

Straight line trim, strong given frame
Of black or gray to support the pane.
What color shows! Oh devoted stain!

In common form, it’s transparent glass
That serves its purpose for light to pass.
It’s different here to please the mass.

In a walled off room with eternal space
The light shines in from His divine grace.
The wholesome fulfillment is a soul’s firm base.

It’s the superficies that are now enjoyed.
Reflection, Refraction are tools employed.
By object awry our view not decoyed.

The imperfections make the good sight.
Our imperfections give individuals might.
To judge unjustly is practice of spite.

Christine
In great sacrifice you gave me birth.
Wonderful guidance, mine on this earth.
You teach, you guide by example and love.
To get along, complacency is not enough.
You want my happiness, you accept your lot,
for the blessings of life are yours hard fought.
You forgive me wholly when I cause you pain,
As I age, more of my love you gain.
My clothes you clean; you nourish me.
Your spirit so strong, through you I see.
With my father at home you do reign;
I will return to live with you again.

Dimensions

You say you know me, you barely do.
To you I’m one dimensioned, well who are you?
As an article pulled to the face of the blind,
You can only read between two of the lines.

Now I’m 3-D – a circle or square,
To read the outside is rarely fair.
You see my corners, surface, and color,
You wish me transparent to see another.

My mask, a shame, shows me as a “MAN,”
It takes more than a look to see who I am.
A child of uncut stone or cookie dough,
Or am I growing, set, and now mature?

How many sides can a shape possess?
What kind of surface does a soul confess?
Am I round and smooth or hard and rough?
Am I a combination of intangible stuff?

You spend the time. You want to discover.
You’re interested enough to see through the cover.
Take out your glass and scope the fissure.

Take up courage if the journey intrigues you.
It’s possible I’ll join in the search-way for two.
Don’t let me go on my own so soon;
Something new to be found; something more to fine tune.

Epochs V

  1. From birth to death, growth
    School, seminary, sports, choir
    Culture established
  2. Sent off to be taught
    Family, friends, cabin is missed
    Perspectives are born
  3. Two months and years long
    MTC to Mexico
    One learns to learn well
  4. Upon return, trial
    Growth stimulated by time
    Understand ones lot
  5. Knowledge, truth increased.
    The hopeful future brightens
    Love, peace, joy enhanced.

Father

Great His sacrifice, great His love.
I join Him in mountains grand.
He smiles down on me from up above.
He leads me, a child, by the hand.
He instructs me, councils me to have priorities straight.
I feel His pride and glory as His Son.
He desires my I AM to be a happy state.
He expects an account of what has been done.

His fatherly knowledge and friendly smile give a wonderful vision for my soul.
He coaxes me through this earthly trial.
My peace and joy is his goal.

He carefully fulfills his divine role and call.

Green to Brown

A bud so tender, new to life, and green,
A new leaflet unbattered, soft and clean.

Sprouting, growing, pushing forth toward the sun;
The tree branches out to support the new addition.

The faint white light of dawn the world revealing,
The colorful eve’n hews the cool night concealing.

Each growing leaf its identity not cloned;
Its dues and lot accepted for the position owned.

The apparel and raiment exchanged for other colors and tones;
The elements and seasons cause reasons for rattles and moans.

Transformed, hardened, and shaken by time;
The leaf’s been nourished by aged rings in line.

Detached, now falling, to where does it journ?
The breeze now controls the erratic turn.

The movement changed from fall to flow;
The crisp, calm, silver transport gentle and slow.

Reflections deceive, a magnetic pull;
Stay on top, don’t sink, don’t lull.

Retain borders firm and high;
Control the helm and go exploring by.

When rapids come to overturn,
Use weight and stem’s balance to counter and learn.

The ride enjoyed, the current slowed down;
On a bank of the shore, find to be found.

The wind doth blow and guideth along,
Suddenly upward in a revealing song.

The flight concludes in another land;
The lighted sky an ending grand!

You have got the strut
Get off my yellow cherry
Memoirs on paper

I feel nostalgic
My heart aches to be leaving
Spring brings reunion

Statues, fish, light shows
Fire and water fight to reign
Buy a head covering

He took her picture
Here’s a penny; make a wish
Her face like velvet

I wear you out

I put you on, with comfort you seem to wear.
Your new tender leather worn rough and then smooth.
It’s your reliability that you prove.
I fit your five lengths, a common thread we do share.

You protect my thick skin from most wounds and scars,
And when you’re not needed you stay calmly by,
To touch the stove or not, I’ll take advice.
We produce together quick learners we are.

Your seams are strong your resistance for pain’s great.
Your strength and form, through time, do not become less.
You take my cuts, wounds, burns in a patient state.

You fit to the tools that provide my success.
In the project’s end you help me compensate.
Is great your sacrifice for my happiness.

An elect lady
Walker in paths of virtue
Inherit Zion

Seek for the better
Laying aside worldly things
And lift up thy heart

Hearken to God’s voice
You’re a faithful path walker
Expound the scriptures

Crowned in righteousness
Cleave unto you covenants
Keep my commandments

La Meta

As we go a steady speed of 85
Lose your sense to lose your cents in distinct scents
A white Nissan show down the strip is our drive
Don’t you dare touch the face of the innocents.

Looking down from above, oh hold little rail.
Hungary slots, blinking lights; machines call your name
I go, but all my mind, to check my e-mail
Break even, win, lose, it’s not a happy game

A sunny day to have the sunroof open
Summerlin, Rampart, Twain, Captain, Debonair
Girlies on all arms is what I was hopin’

Our hosts come around to see the light they swear
Sleep the day, play the night, and kiss the good times
Forget your pack, not your jewel, one kiss, one dare

My Pet Pleases

It’s warm smooth sand and bear feet.
It’s long mountain grass and sleepy sun warmed air.
It’s wind racing by, heart racing on, wheels racing.
                                                                  It’s silence and inspired thoughts.
It’s a hard, stressful day come successfully to an end.
It’s warm firm lips pressed firmly on those of another.
                                                                              It’s being at peace.
It’s knowledge of doing right and being just.
It’s hanging on a line over a lit city.
                                                                                                                          It’s front row seats.
          It’s a well-aimed sunbeam.
                                  It’s the crowd after a well-executed play.
It’s noting the contrast in a snow-covered ridge.
   It’s acceleration.
                                         It’s balance on smooth ice.
It’s hearing the laugh of a loved one.
It’s the protection of the shade in a hunt.

                                  It’s knowledge.
                                              It’s acceptance of the truth.
It’s the color of deep blue on a clean surface.
                           It’s sufficiency for needs.
It’s control of four wheels, anywhere.
It’s fingertips and long brunette hair.
It’s perfect harmony and white ivory.
It’s a pearl among stones and sand.
                                                                                                     It’s youth and wisdom.
                   It’s an “A”.
It’s an erratic tug on the line.
                                                                                                                          It’s the perfect fix.
 It’s mano.
It’s the backside of a mirror.
                                                                                         It’s ranch.
It’s flowing chalk and medium white paper.

Precious Potential

The hands of measured existence diminish in rhythm duration and strength of the weary voyager.

Seconds count down, years count up, knowledge counts.

From pure young child to aged man growth derives from resistance.

A foundation supports, a frame gives form, a roof protects, a furnace gives warmth.

Light glows from a flame, a flame of divers immensities.

A figure floats upon a plain of consistency to give beauty.

Its art is choice as the melody of a select chorus.

This enjoyed as principle, concept integrate.

Wasted potential the sin of the great, experience the potter of mortal clay.

Companionship, comradery in sincere service and sincerity roll into one entity divine ability and worthy life.

Life and love, action and choice, sacrifice ultimately saves.

The Climb

Start from the bottom looking up,
Prepared with gear as to not interrupt.

With biners, harness, and climbing rope,
In trusted company one attacks the steep slope.

The climber well focused begins to plan,
Reaching the top, the bright view is grand.

One pulls with the arm, the hand anchored firm,
Stay on your legs; it’s a main concern.

With actions of power against the opposing force,
The journey begun on a challenging course.

By technique, good placement, and useful holds,
One overcomes surprises untold.

Practice and training make competent
One won’t be bound by predicament.

The aid of another, a trusted bole
Will keep one on line along the gray.

From the sticky point to the easy stretch
To take a fall means a miserable wretch.

Now towards the top, resources strung thin,
The soul’s excited to have rest again.

Standing free on hilltop high,
To view the scene to let out a sigh.

The physical pain and stress is past;
The memory of such is long to last.

So on to bigger and better climbs,
Experience gained for other times.

Meanwhile enjoy the sun and bright sky.
Make the climb with a worthy eye.

The Pearl

To find a pearl in mountains rough,
A simple smile seems to be enough.

The image in the mirror, I reach out to touch.
It’s torture to me to know you as such.

Drops of deep blue sea, are those strands of gold?
A simple touch pulls me out of the cold.

I’ll converse with you, but my luck I fear;
That you’ve been lost in the sand, I dread to hear.

To notice appearance clean white and pure
Is not enough…curiosity endures.

Why am I drawn to know you well?
Are you an island found? Only time will tell…

The Weekend

The Angel wanted to fly; Springtime was to return.
Jose wanted to fish and D, well he was in for fun.
From border to border in quest for sand
The fish finder’s found in Lamanite land.
The angel arrived at a near celestial home;
Only the fridgedaire would cause a mom to groan.
Safe and sound with her parents to keep.
A time to rest and catch up on her sleep.
The others were off to the deep blue sea.
Tell the parents, don’t ask…be confident, don’t plea.
Into the nugget, oh what a ride
Oh so valuable with Springtime inside.
Two worthy souls were to watch and protect
Down to Ensenada to get what they expect.
With a map, the tongue, and a feel for the place
Down to the docks to reserve them space.
Good 'ol Luis and Jorge too
Wanted the best a businessman could do.
They bartered and dickered and thought to lie,
“I won’t have that,” April said with a sigh.
We got a good deal, Gordo II was the boat
Now off to the surf, or jump off of the road.
You can swim, you can tan but your clothes don’t change,
Watching eyes may see from any range.
The beach is a dump the dump has its rats
Best there not to slumber you may be left with a mat.
The night on the town with stops and turns
Enjoy the entrées, watch out they may burn.
Hotel with no fire, hotel with view fair
Hotel with firm beds, hotel without sleepers there.
Lovers in cars, Police will steal
Waves kiss the beach; let’s get out of this deal.
Location has changed some sleep come watch
Some awake too early their boat to launch
Onto the boat anticipating the luck
One not too happy, his tummy like muck.
I want my pole, I like your jig
I’ll pull one up; I’ll fill this rig.
Stories and stories capture the day
Ana Detroit the favorite needless to say.
With waves, and waves, and waves and waves
Put me on land or into my grave.
Chasing the fish, some easy to tease,
Hook me the big one, hook it for me please.
Off to the pad on wheels secure
Round corners, over hills, what is your fear?
Give handouts to kids but don’t play with her
On the I-5 your home in a blur.
Although separate, the four are together again
On to tell tales of their relaxing weekend.

“ma.
da-da.
NO!
Wnt wadder.
I’m hungry.
Can I try?
Joey likes you.
Are you going to the game?
I know that!
I think I’m going to college.
What does homeostasis mean? What is a derivative?
Would you like to go?
All I know is that it’s true and God loves me.
Faith is the first principle of the gospel that gives us the power to do the things we need to be able to return to our Father so we can live in happiness and be with our family together and create new worlds as gods by the law of obedience and power we have because of our choices…
Brother, do you accept Christ?
What am I going to do…be…who am I to date…marry…where to go…who knows?
It just feels right.
…fue el poeta más influencial de américa latina…quien escribió con perspectivo del pueblo…
I passed!
I’m nervous!
Will you…?
We got the job!
goo-goo-ga-ga
I understand.
In conclusive analysis of the financial statements composed and approved by the CPA’s and the associated firm, the proprietorship is deemed the rights to accept the intended offer and proposed contract…we also hope to out-source to a selective collection of co-ops as a ploy to increment gross revenues for the fiscal year…
Three times seven equals twenty-seven.
I love you.
I’ll be home at 6:00.
The first one’s out of the nest.
The last one’s on his way.
goo-goo-ga-ga
We went to Hawaii and then to Alaska…
That’s all right sweetie, don’t cry, we’ll see her again someday.
.
No, I don’t want any!
Get off my lawn!
I’m doing well, thanks.
Who’s he?
Who are you?
.
I hear music.
Is it…are you…it is…
It’s so light…so perfect…
Thank you.”

Worthlin

Tender voice of the spirit
Powerful voice of the Lord
Piercing the heart
More mighty then the sword

Carried from land to land
The sound of the gospel preached
Shared from child to child
Ready hearts are reached

The worded pages leafed to gray
Give council for one to find
Uncovered by the diligent child
To comfort and fill the mind

Come listen to a prophet’s voice
The grand gathering come and join
To be instructed of his will
More precious than Caesar’s coin

Have faith my child
In know your soul
Come home young spirit
Make heaven your goal

To you the world of little worth
Appears a splendor to see
Explore in it; learn of it
And seek to better be

Work to be strong and wise
Be balanced in all you do
Be active in your calling
Make celestial dreams come true

Find joy in eternal things
Be happy in the word
Rejoice in all the simple things
Enjoy the way of the Lord
